Toyosu Market: Visiting Tokyo's Fish Market Near teamLab Planets
Updated October 27, 2026
Toyosu Market is Tokyo’s central wholesale market for fish and produce, and visitors can walk its galleries free from 5:00 to 17:00 on the days it is open (JNTO Tourist Information Center, December 2025). It replaced the wholesale market at Tsukiji in October 2018. For anyone visiting teamLab Planets, it is the obvious pairing: Shijo-mae Station, one minute from the market, is one stop from Shin-Toyosu, and teamLab says the museum is five minutes on foot from the market.
What Toyosu Market is
It is a working market for the trade, not a tourist attraction that sells fish. The market opened on 11 October 2018, took over from Tsukiji, and covers about 408,000 square metres, almost twice Tsukiji’s area (Wikipedia). It is in three main buildings, each with observation windows over its own trading floor (JNTO-TIC):
| Block | Building | For visitors |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | Fruits and Vegetables Building | Restaurants and shops, 1st floor |
| 6 | Fisheries Intermediate Wholesale Market Building | Restaurants 3rd floor, shops 4th floor, Green Roof Plaza |
| 7 | Fisheries Wholesale Market Building | Tuna auction windows 2nd floor; restaurants 3rd floor (Management Facilities Building) |
Opening hours and closed days
Visitor entry is from 5:00 to 17:00; restaurants and shops keep their own hours (JNTO-TIC). The market is closed on Sundays, on national holidays and on extra days set in its business calendar. For the rest of 2026, the JNTO-TIC calendar lists these extra closures: 28 October; 11 and 18 November; 2, 9, 16, 23 and 31 December. One exception runs the other way: it opens on Sunday 27 December 2026. There is no car or bicycle parking for visitors, so come by train.
The observation galleries
The visitor course runs above the trading floors, behind glass, in all three buildings. In the Fisheries Wholesale Market Building you can watch the tuna auction, around 5:30 to 6:30, from second-floor windows, with no reservation (JNTO-TIC). A lower Tuna Auction Observation Deck, closer to the floor, takes 100 people a day chosen by online lottery, with applications open for a set period in the month before your visit. The full process is on our Toyosu tuna auction page.
Where to eat sushi inside
The restaurants are on the 1st floor of Block 5 and the 3rd floors of Blocks 6 and 7. Nippon.com counted over 20 restaurants on Block 6’s third floor in 2019, including eight sushi shops, and six sushi shops on the third floor of Block 7’s management building; it names Sushi Dai (Block 6) and Daiwa Sushi (Block 5) as the two with early-morning queues. Hours vary by shop, so check before you go and aim for the morning. Next door, Toyosu Senkyaku Banrai has an Edo-style food street that opened in February 2024 and keeps later hours.
Getting there, and on to teamLab Planets
The market is one minute’s walk from Shijo-mae Station on the Yurikamome, about 20 minutes on foot from Toyosu Station on the Yurakucho Line, and reachable by Toei bus from Shimbashi or Tokyo Station (JNTO-TIC). From the market, teamLab Planets is five minutes on foot or one stop on to Shin-Toyosu. A morning plan that works: the tuna auction at 5:30, sushi for breakfast, then an early museum slot (it opens at 08:00).
If you would rather go with a guide, the teamLab Planets and Toyosu Market tour covers both in three hours for $133, with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. It does not include the tuna auction, and one review on its listing found the market quiet on an afternoon departure, so pick a morning start if you can. Deciding between this and the old market? Frequently asked questions
Is Toyosu Market free to visit?
Yes. The visitor route and galleries are free, including the tuna auction windows. You pay only for what you eat or buy.
What time should I go to Toyosu Fish Market?
By 5:30 if you want the tuna auction, which runs until about 6:30. For restaurants and the galleries without the auction, early to mid-morning, while the market is active.
Is Toyosu Fish Market worth going to?
Yes if you want to see the trade and eat sushi at the source, especially paired with teamLab Planets five minutes away. If you want street-food grazing, Tsukiji Outer Market suits better.
Is Toyosu Market open on Sunday?
No. It is closed on Sundays (except 27 December 2026), on national holidays and on extra days each month, mostly Wednesdays.
